Yngwie Malmsteen (Lars Johan Yngwie Lannerbäck) nació el 30 de junio de 1963, en Estocolmo, Suecia.
A la edad de 7 años vio en la televisión un documental de la muerte de Jimmy Hendrix, donde vió que Jimi quemaba la guitarra. Yngwie no se inspiró por la música de jimmy hendrix si no por el sacrificio de la guitarra que hizo. Esto lo hizo empezar a tocar
Emigró a los EE.UU. a la edad de 17 años.
Luego formo parte de 'Steeler'. Grabó con dicha formación el único álbum de la banda. Dentro de ese álbum, el solo de guitarra de "Cold day in hell" o la introducción de 3 minutos del tema "Hot on your heels", ya dejaba entrever un guitarrista con un talento y dotes innegables. En el primer concierto con la banda, hubo como público unas treinta personas. Tanto impresionó a esa poca gente, que la voz se corrió por todo el estado. A su siguiente concierto acudieron grandes mitos del rock, como Ozzy Osbourne, miembros de Kiss, etc, quienes quedaron asombrados por la capacidad del sueco con el instrumento, quien mezclaba velocidad y virtuosismo como si de un juego se tratara.
Más tarde abandonó Steeler para unirse a un proyecto mucho más ambicioso, Alcatrazz, en el que se encontraba el vocalista ex-Rainbow, Graham Bonnett. Juntos grabaron el álbum "No parole from Rock ´N Roll", con algunos temas compuestos en gran parte por Malmsteen. El grupo cosechó numerosos éxitos, sobre todo en Japón. En aquel país dieron gran cantidad de conciertos. Los miembros de la formación en seguida se dieron cuenta que el público básicamente iba a ver a Malmsteen. Antes de salir al escenario, la gente coreaba su nombre..."Yngwie, Yngwie...". Durante los conciertos, era el centro de todas las miradas. Más tarde, aprovechando el tirón que tuvo con Alcatrazz, decidió iniciar su carrera en solitario, la cual comenzó en 1984. El público enseguida reconoció el talento de Malmsteen con el instrumento, recogiendo premios ese mismo año por numerosos medios de comunicación especializados de norteamérica, como mejor nuevo talento, mejor guitarrista, etc. Al mismo tiempo, el reconocido guitarrista Steve Vai sustituyó a Malmsteen y Alcatrazz fue perdiendo popularidad rápidamente, pese a publicar el álbum Disturbing the Peace.
Luego su proyecto '"Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force"' que inicialmente seria un proyecto instrumental paralelo a Alcatrazz, vería la luz en 1984 con el cual se dio a conocer al hacerse acreedor a una nominación a los premios Grammy y lograr que el disco estuviera en el top 100 en ventas. De este álbum se destacan clásicos como '"Black Star"' ,'"Far Beyond the sun"','"Evil Eye"' entre otros recurrentes en sus conciertos durante toda su carrera.
En el año siguiente saldría a la venta el álbum "Marching out"con la colaboración de Jeff Scott Soto como líder Vocal, y sus viejos compañeros Anders y Jens Johansson y el bajista Marcel Jacob, logrando también un significativo éxito en ventas y realizando giras de gran aceptación especialmente en Japón. En este mismo año participó como invitado en la grabación de la canción "STARS", producida y dirigida por el cantante Ronnie James Dio, quien al ver el éxito y su virtuosismo lo invito, allí recibió grandes elogios por parte del mismísimo Dio, y de David St. Hubbins en una entrevista hecha en el programa much music en 1986 en especial a esta grabación.
La carrera de Yngwie continuó en ascenso con su siguiente álbum "Trilogy" que sería uno de los referentes de su estilo y clase únicos, esta vez con la colaboración de Mark Boals en la linea vocal. De este álbum destacan canciones como "Liar", o la famosísima "Trilogy Suite op 5".
Sin embargo en el año siguiente las cosas no irían nada bien para Yngwie quien sufrió un terrible accidente al chocar su Jaguar contra un árbol, creándole un coágulo en el cerebro (producto de haber roto el timon con la cabeza en el momento del impacto) que no solo lo dejaría en coma durante tres semanas, sino también poniendo en riesgo su carrera al afectar los nervios de su brazo derecho.
Luego de una dura terapia Yngwie tuvo que enfrentar la terrible desgracia de enterarse de la muerte de la mujer que lo inspiró y motivo a seguir su carrera: su madre Rigmor.
Para completar un manager abusivo lo dejo sin dinero y con un montón de facturas médicas por pagar. Sin embargo el espíritu fuerte y decidido de Malmsteen, lo llevaron a una milagrosa recuperación y logró grabar su álbum más exitoso y comercialmente accesible "Oddysey" con hits como "Heaven Tonight" y otros. Además de realizar un tour por Europa oriental siendo el primer artista occidental el lograrlo con éxito. Esto conllevó a la grabación de"Trial By Fire: Live in Lenningrad" con tomas de sus mejores presentaciones en Rusia.
Durante los 90 el estilo neoclasico de Yngwie no logró la popularidad de los 80 especialmente en los Estados Unidos, iniciando por el lanzamiento de su disco "Eclipse" que logró una buena ubicación pero no lo suficente a pesar de su claro ángulo comercial pero aún así de gran contenido , y finalmente con "Fire & ice" disco que batió records en Japon considerado una obra maestra por muchos de sus fanáticos, pero que debido a una mala promoción y al auge del Grunge no se logró el esperado exito en el mercado americano. Yngwie retomó el sendero con el album "seventh sign"en el 94 y luego el "Magnum opus" en el 95 , esta vez de a mano de Michael Vescera en las voces, luego de el siguiente disco "inspiration" que traia varios covers de sus bandas favoritas y la colaboración de varios de sus anteriores vocalistas Yngwie Grabó el album "Facing the animal" con la notable colaboración de Cozy Powell en la bateria. luego del infortunado incidente donde Cozy perdió la vida ,Yngwie dedicó su gira de 1998 al legendario baterista.
En ese mismo año Malmsteen logra concluir su proyecto "concerto suite for electric guitar and orchestra in E flat minor opus 1" con la colaboración de David Rosenthal . El disco se graba junto a la orquesta filarmonica de la república checa.
Es conocido debido a su velocidad de ejecución dentro del estilo heavy metal y metal melódico. Su técnica lo llevó a incorporar elementos de la técnica de digitación del violín al estilo de Niccolò Paganini y Antonio Vivaldi, así como fragmentos estilísticos melódicos y armónicos barrocos. Fue de este modo el precursor del denominado Metal neoclásico. Sus siguientes discos son mezcla de temas instrumentales y cantados, siempre en la misma línea clásica.
En el año 2003 se une con Steve Vai y con Joe Satriani para el tour G3.
